SINGAPORE — A dog involved in an alleged animal abuse case has been removed from its owner's home and is now under the care of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).

"AVA is investigating the case. The husky has been surrendered to AVA and it has been sent to a vet clinic for medical examination," said the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) on Tuesday (May 24). While investigations are ongoing, the husky is being cared for by the SPCA, added the AVA.

On Monday morning, two video clips were uploaded on Facebook showed a man allegedly abusing a dog. The post, uploaded at about 9.30am, showed a man kicking a husky at what seems to be the backyard of a house.

SPCA's  Acting Executive Director Dr Jaipal Singh Gill said in a statement on Monday night that the SPCA was informed of the case by a member of the public. "As we were greatly shocked by the contents of the video and deeply concerned for the dog’s safety, we immediately informed the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) whilst pressing for urgent action to be taken," said Dr Singh Gill. He said that the AVA acted swiftly, "facilitating the removal of the dog from the owner’s home" and that the dog was sent for a thorough physical examination and X-rays.

In one of the clips, which lasted about 35 seconds, the man was seen hitting and kicking the husky. He also lifted the struggling husky by its leash. The second six-second clip showed the man kicking the husky. Two other dogs were also seen in the videos.

Facebook user Maimunah Mohadi, who uploaded the videos, said the incident took place on Monday morning and she had reported the matter to the AVA.

As at 10pm on Monday, the Facebook post has been shared more than 9,000 times.

"The SPCA condemns this blatant act of animal abuse and will work closely with the authorities for stern action to be taken against the perpetrator," said Dr Singh Gill.

The man in the video took to Facebook on Monday night to defend his actions saying that he had "full control over the strength to make sure the husky (was) not hurt".
