SINGAPORE — Two brothers were sentenced by the High Court today (Jan 9) to 11 years in jail and eight strokes of the cane for assisting in the rape of a pub waitress, while their friend was sentenced to 13 and a half years in jail with 12 strokes of the cane for the rape.
The brothers, Calvin Tan Jian Wei, 28, and Edwin Tan Jian An, 26, were each sentenced for conspiring to commit rape, while the friend, 25-year old Ho Boon Sheng was given a higher sentence by the court for rape.
The trio committed the offence against a Singaporean pub waitress, then 18 years old, at a hotel in Jiak Chuan Road between 11pm on July 3, 2010, and 3.41am on July 4, 2010.
On the night of July 3, 2010, the brothers and Ho met up with the victim — whom Edwin had been in contact with for a month prior to the incident — at the pub on Boat Quay where she worked. They began playing a drinking game and the victim, after having had multiple alcoholic drinks with them as well as with other customers, became severely intoxicated.
The three men then brought her to the hotel, where they all molested her and Ho raped her. During this time, the victim repeatedly screamed and tried to fend off her assaulters.
The brothers and Ho were arrested at the hotel on the morning of July 4, 2010 after concerned hotel staff contacted the police.
The trio were re-arrested following investigations on June 6, 2013. The brothers remained in remand until the hearing today, while Ho had posted bail.
Ho had since gotten married and now has two young daughters, one aged two and the other born on Jan 1 this year. His wife and daughters, along with other family members, as well as the brothers’ family members were present in court today.
