Bus hits 74-year-old pedestrian in Sengkang, driver arrested for careless driving

SINGAPORE — A 68-year-old male bus driver has been arrested for careless driving after an accident at a traffic junction in Sengkang injured an elderly pedestrian, the police said on Friday (Sept 30).

The victim was conscious when he was being taken to the hospital, the police added.

The authorities said they were alerted to an accident involving a bus and a 74-year-old pedestrian at the junction of Compassvale Road and Compassvale Drive at about 10.50pm on Thursday night. 

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said the victim was taken to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital.

In response to TODAY's queries, SMRT Buses said the accident involved bus service 110.

"We are assisting police with their investigations. The bus captain has been suspended from driving duties," said Mr Vincent Gay, deputy managing director of SMRT Buses.

The company's "care team" is also reaching out to the pedestrian’s next-of-kin to offer assistance.

Video footage of the accident posted onto the page of a Facebook group "Singapore roads accident.com" shows a green public bus stopped in the middle of a traffic junction.

The video shows the victim on the ground, with his legs underneath the front of the bus.

At the same time, a person in an orange vest can be seen pacing about the front of the bus while making phone calls. He is also seen speaking to passers-by at a roadside kerb nearby.

The driver was arrested for careless driving causing grievous hurt, said the police. Investigations are ongoing.
