SINGAPORE — Eighteen people were left stranded in six cable car cabins for at least half an hour on Wednesday evening (July 27) due to an "operating system error".

The incident occurred on the ropeway's Mount Faber Line at 9.14pm and the operating system had to be rebooted, said a spokesperson for the operator Mount Faber Leisure Group on Friday.

“Before the system could be restarted, however, the cable car cabins were required to be returned to the nearest station for guests to disembark safely. In-cabin announcements were made to inform guests about the temporary stoppage,” the spokesperson said in response to CNA's query.

“We were in constant communications with the affected passengers via the in-cabin intercom and our service hotline. Regular updates were provided during the entire duration to give assurance and ensure their safety and well-being.”

The cabin return process was activated using a secondary system at 9.47pm, and all passengers alighted by 10.55pm.

“All guests disembarked at the cable car stations safely, without any injuries or medical issues, and our staff on-ground rendered support to ensure their well-being,” the spokesperson said, adding that the incident did not involve any mechanical fault.

The Mount Faber Line runs between stations at Mount Faber and Sentosa, with a station at HarbourFront in between.

The system error was rectified and normal operations on the line resumed on Thursday morning.

“After all the passengers had disembarked, our team restarted the system to resolve the operating system error. This was done in accordance with the cable car manufacturer’s operating manual,” the spokesperson said.

“The cable car service resumed normal operations the next morning after all required safety checks were completed.

The spokesperson added that the Singapore Cable Car has safety measures and secondary systems in place that enable safe service recovery.

“We also conduct regular maintenance and emergency preparedness exercises with the Singapore Civil Defence Force to validate operational plans and build resilience,” the spokesperson said. CNA
