Parliament elected Mr Lim Biow Chuan and Mr Charles Chong as Deputy Speakers yesterday. This is Mr Chong’s (Member of Parliament for Punggol East) second appointment to the post, but Mr Lim’s (Mountbatten) first time assuming the role.

Deputy Speakers take on the responsibilities of the Speaker when the latter is not present. The Speaker — currently Madam Halimah Yacob — is the presiding officer of Parliament, and takes charge of regulating debates in the House and oversees matters of practice and procedures, among other things.

The proposal to elect Mr Lim and Mr Chong was put forward by Marine Parade GRC MP Seah Kian Peng, and supported by Tanjong Pagar GRC MP Indranee Rajah. Both Mr Seah and Ms Indranee are former Deputy Speakers.

Speaking to TODAY over the phone yesterday, Mr Lim said it was “a privilege and an honour” to serve as Deputy Speaker and he was grateful for the opportunity. “I will do what I can to understand more about the role and to provide support to the Speaker to the best of my ability,” he said.

Mr Lim added that he expects to spend more time on parliamentary work, but would need to be briefed in greater detail about his responsibilities. KENNETH CHENG
