SINGAPORE — China has sent 500,000 surgical masks and 100,000 KN95 masks to Singapore to support the Republic’s fight against Covid-19.

In a statement, the Ministry of Health (MOH) said that Senior Minister of State for Health Lam Pin Min received the masks from Chinese Ambassador to Singapore Hong Xiaoyong on Tuesday (May 5).

Dr Lam expressed his “heartfelt appreciation” to the Chinese government for the masks, which will go into Singapore’s national stockpile during the Covid-19 outbreak.

"As the pandemic continues to threaten lives and livelihoods around the world, international cooperation is crucial in surmounting this common foe," Dr Lam said, adding that Singapore and China have been working closely at all levels to stem the spread of the coronavirus.

These efforts include facilitating the repatriation of each other’s nationals and providing humanitarian assistance. Officials from both countries have also been exchanging best practices and discussing initiatives to facilitate trade, the continued flow of essential goods and personnel, as well as joint research and development, Dr Lam said.

He also noted that this year marks the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Singapore and China.

"Such robust collaboration during this difficult time is testament to the strong friendship between our countries," Dr Lam said.

"If countries can cooperate and work together, we will be in a better position to manage the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic."
