SINGAPORE —  A 77-year-old man, who looked like he was going to use a chopper during a reported fight with another man at a hawker centre during dinner time, will be charged on Friday (March 18) with criminal intimidation and possession of an offensive weapon.

The clash at 29 Bendemeer Road, which is the address of Bendemeer Market and Food Centre, happened on Wednesday at about 6.55pm.

The police said in a statement on Thursday that they received “multiple calls” about the alleged fight. Both men had left the scene by the time the police arrived.

“One of the men was allegedly holding a chopper,” they said, adding that they arrested the man within two hours of the incident, with the help of police cameras.

Early investigations found that the 77-year-old man had allegedly swung a chopper at the other man during the fight but the chopper did not hit anyone.

If found guilty of criminal intimidation, the man may be jailed up to two years or fined, or both.

Anyone convicted of having in possession an offensive weapon in a public place may be jailed up to three years and caned not less than six strokes. Those above the age of 50 cannot be caned by law.
