SINGAPORE — Television host and comedian Trevor Noah has postponed his scheduled appearance in Hong Kong indefinitely amid ongoing protests in the city, organiser LA Comedy Live announced on its website on Tuesday (Aug 20).

Mr Noah, who presented two shows in Singapore on Monday, was set to perform at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on Wednesday as part of his Loud and Clear tour. The South African-born comedian is host of The Daily Show, a popular American television programme.

LA Comedy Live said in its statement: “The safety of the artiste and the attendees has always been our top priority and we have been working on the rescheduled date of the event.”

Hong Kong has been rocked by waves of protests since early June, including some violent clashes. They were first sparked by a controversial bill that would have allowed extradition to mainland China but have since broadened to issues such as police treatment of the protesters.

Over the weekend, protesters rallied peacefully in torrential rain. Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam said on Tuesday that she hoped this is the start of an effort to restore calm in the city.

Mr Noah talked about the Hong Kong protests at his Singapore show on Monday evening at The Star Performing Arts Centre, telling the audience that he was impressed by reports of street protesters cleaning up after themselves.

He also praised the protesters at Hong Kong International Airport for the way they had apologised to travellers who were inconvenienced by their actions, which had led to about 1,000 flights being grounded earlier this month.

"I have never been on anyone's side more," he quipped.

Customers who have bought tickets to the Hong Kong show can expect a full refund via ticketing agent HK Ticketing, the organiser said.
