SINGAPORE — Brunei’s Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah was treated to a display of the Republic’s Commandos’ prowess during a visit to Pasir Ris Camp on Thursday (July 6).

While there, he watched the Singapore Armed Forces’ (SAF) counter-terrorism forces storming a building, a freefall demonstration by the Red Lions parachutists, and fired training munitions at simulated terror targets, the Ministry of Defence (Mindef) said.

In a Facebook post, Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen wrote that the “commandos put on an excellent display of their prowess” during the Sultan’s visit.

“They came by land and air to storm a terrorist cell. We also showed our state-of-the-art Airborne-Trooper Training Facility to the delegation.

“A good visit that will strengthen bilateral defence ties further,” wrote Dr Ng, who hosted the Sultan and his delegation during their visit to the camp.

Mindef said Sultan Bolkiah’s visit to the SAF “underscores the close and long-standing defence ties between Singapore and Brunei”.

“Both countries celebrated the 40th anniversary of bilateral defence relations last year.

Interactions between the SAF and the Royal Brunei Armed Forces have also grown in scope and depth, with regular bilateral exercises, visits and professional exchanges,” it added.

Sultan Bolkiah ended his two-day visit on Thursday.

The trip marks his fourth state visit to Singapore, with the last one in April 2014.

On Wednesday, both countries commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Currency Interchangeability Agreement between Singapore and Brunei by launching commemorative S$50 and B$50 notes.
