Covid-19: Rosyth School teacher among 4 unlinked community cases in Singapore

SINGAPORE — A primary school teacher, an executive at an equipment firm, a kitchen assistant and a cook were the four new Covid-19 cases recorded on Saturday (May 29) that have not been linked to known sources of infection.

  • There were 33 cases of Covid-19 recorded on May 29
  • Of these, 23 were in the community, four of which had no links to past cases
  • There were 10 imported cases and none in dormitories housing migrant workers

 

SINGAPORE — A primary school teacher, an executive at an equipment firm, a kitchen assistant and a cook were the four new Covid-19 cases recorded on Saturday (May 29) that have not been linked to known sources of infection.

The Ministry of Health (MOH) said in its nightly update on the coronavirus situation that the 40-year-old teacher at Rosyth School was last at work on May 18. 

The Singaporean woman, who is fully vaccinated, was confirmed to have contracted the coronavirus on Friday.

A 49-year-old executive at Eng Soon Chair & Table Hire Service, which provides indoor and outdoor equipment for events, tested positive for the coronavirus on Friday. 

The Singaporean woman, who received her first dose of a Covid-19 vaccine earlier this month, has been working from home.

The kitchen assistant, 33, works at Hua Zai Eating House and was confirmed to have caught the coronavirus on Saturday. 

The Malaysian went to a general practitioner’s clinic earlier in the week after losing his sense of taste. 

As for the fourth case, a Malaysian cook, 23, who works at Western food stall West Grill Station in Anchorvale, he tested positive for Covid-19 on Saturday. 

Nineteen other cases were linked to past infections.

Of these, eight were linked to a cluster that began with a 31-year-old Singaporean employed by cleaning solutions provider Hong Ye Group as a cleaner at Changi Business Park. This cluster now has 17 cases. 

Separately, three cases were traced to a 49-year-old manager at Success Consultancy, forming a new cluster of four. 

Two others were traced to a cluster involving a 77-year-old housewife, which now has six cases. Another two infected persons were linked to a cluster at the Jem and Westgate shopping malls in Jurong, which now has 62 cases.

The clusters linked to Changi Prison Complex, Chevy’s Bar and Bistro on Beach Road, and delivery riders working for fast-food chain McDonald’s, each grew by one case.

There were 10 new cases that were imported and no cases from dormitories housing migrant workers.

MOH said that 13 of the 33 new cases reported on Saturday had no symptoms and were detected through proactive screening and surveillance.

On the whole, the number of new cases in the community has dropped to 138 this past week from 199 in the week before. 

The number of cases with no known links in the community has also dipped to 23 this past week from 48 cases in the week before.

  • An eight-month-old Singaporean girl who does not go to any childcare facility

  • A 32-year-old Singaporean housewife

  • A 47-year-old Singaporean man who works as a part-time cleaner at cleaning services firm Abba Maintenance

  • A 13-year-old Singaporean girl who goes to Xinghua Primary School and was last in school on May 18

CLUSTER LINKED TO SUCCESS CONSULTANCY MANAGER

  • A 44-year-old man from India who works as an IT engineer at insurance firm AXA Go Singapore

  • A 26-year-old man from India who works as an engineer at semiconductor firm GlobalFoundries

  • A 26-year-old man from India who works at Success Consultancy and was last at work on May 25

CLUSTER INVOLVING 77-YEAR-OLD HOUSEWIFE

  • A 39-year-old Singaporean woman who works as a teacher at Pathlight School and was last at work on May 14

  • A nine-year-old Singaporean girl who goes to Springdale Primary School and was last at school on May 14 

JEM AND WESTGATE CLUSTERS

  • A 32-year-old Singaporean man who works in an administrative role at the National Library Board and has been working from home

  • A 32-year-old Singaporean man who works as a chef at rooftop bar LeVeL33 along Marina Boulevard and visited Westgate on May 20

CHANGI PRISON COMPLEX CLUSTER

  • A 48-year-old Singaporean man who is an inmate at Changi Prison Complex

CHEVY’S BAR AND BISTRO CLUSTER 

  • A 21-year-old Malaysian man who works as a kitchen staff member at Indo Bowl eatery at Sultan Gate and was last at work on May 22

CLUSTER LINKED TO MCDONALD’S DELIVERY RIDERS

  • A 28-year-old Malaysian man who works as a kitchen staff member and service crew member with Pizza Hut Express at Holland Village MRT Station

CASE LINKED TO PAST INFECTION

  • A 27-year-old Malaysian who works at a McDonald’s outlet in Yishun had his infection traced to his household contact, a 24-year-old Malaysian who works at a McDonald’s outlet at The Woodgrove condominium who tested positive earlier in the week

IMPORTED CASES

The 10 imported cases had been given stay-home notices on arrival in Singapore and were tested under quarantine, MOH said.

They were:

  • Three Singaporeans and two permamnet residents who returned from India and the Philippines

  • Four work-permit holders who came from Indonesia and the Philippines — of whom one is a foreign domestic worker 

  • A special-pass holder who is a sea crew member. He arrived from Indonesia on a vessel and disembarked for a crew change, and was tested for Covid-19 under isolation 

UPDATES ON REMAINING CASES

Saturday’s tally takes Singapore’s Covid-19 cases to 62,003.

Of these, 61,423 people have recovered and been discharged, including 16 on Saturday. 

There are still 226 patients who are hospitalised for Covid-19. Most are stable or improving. Three are in critical condition under intensive care. 

Another 322 patients are being cared for at community facilities. They have mild symptoms or are clinically well but still test positive for the coronavirus.

Singapore has had 32 deaths from Covid-19 complications.
