SINGAPORE — Six youths aged between 14 and 20 were fined between S$600 and S$2,000 for breaking safe distancing measures during the ongoing Covid-19 circuit breaker period, the police said on Wednesday (April 22).

A video of them gathering at Lorong Halus Bridge in the wee hours of April 16 had gone viral online.

The bridge is located at the Lorong Halus Wetland, along the eastern bank of Serangoon Reservoir.

The police said that they had received several reports of the video, which showed one of the youths commenting about the circuit breaker measures and making offensive gestures.

In the video, he was wearing a mask but left his mouth exposed. He also spewed vulgarities and said: “They stay home, we stay out. We're not scared of the government! The more they ask us to stay at home, the more we come out.”

Officers from the Ang Mo Kio Police Division then identified the six youths within nine hours.

They had been out cycling and went to the bridge. The video went viral after they shared it among themselves.

During the circuit breaker period, all social gatherings are banned and people are not allowed to leave their homes for non-essential purposes.

The youths were given composition fines under the Covid-19 (Temporary Measures) (Control Order) Regulations 2020.

On Monday, Minister for the Environment and Water Resources Masagos Zulkifli revealed that another nine people faced S$1,000 fines for repeat safe distancing offences, while more than 280 others were set to pay S$300 each for first offences.

As of Wednesday evening, there have been 10,141 cases of Covid-19 reported in Singapore.
