SINGAPORE — Nightlife operators have been warned that they must continue to strictly implement safe distancing measures ahead of the closure of all entertainment venues here on Thursday (March 26) to stem the spread of Covid-19.

"We are aware a number of nightlife operators intend to host ‘farewell’ events tonight that could result in large numbers of people congregating," said the Singapore Tourism Board (STB), Enterprise Singapore and the police in a joint statement on Wednesday.

“These events undermine the campaign against Covid-19 and increases risk to public health. If you are planning to attend, we urge you to seriously reconsider, if not for your own health, then for the health of those around you.”

This comes a day after the government announced that all entertainment venues will be closed from March 26, 11:59pm until April 30 to reduce the risk of new Covid-19 clusters forming, which could further strain Singapore’s healthcare system.

Nightlife operators have been told to strictly implement the safe distancing measures announced by the Ministry of Health on March 20.

These include suspending events with 250 or more participants and implementing all necessary precautions for events with less than 250 participants. Precautions include ensuring a distance of at least one metre between all participants and reducing mingling.

Over the next two days, officers from government agencies and the police will be on the ground to monitor and enforce safe distancing measures. The traffic police will also conduct islandwide enforcement operations against drink-driving during this period.

"During this time, we appeal to Singaporeans to exercise good judgement and social responsibility," the statement said.

"This will play an important part in keeping fellow Singaporeans and our loved ones safe in the midst of this global pandemic."
