SINGAPORE — SBS Transit has installed protective plastic shields in six of its buses as part of a two-week trial to better protect its drivers during the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

The Singapore-manufactured shields are made of polycarbonate and are similar to those that were previously outfitted in 400 ComfortDelGro taxis in May.

In a statement on Monday (July 20), SBS Transit said that the shields have more enhancements than those previously installed in taxis, such as a side opening that provides an unobstructed view of the bus’ left side mirror.

A transparent film has been applied on the shield to minimise reflections that may distract the drivers, and the side of the shield features a flap that allows drivers to easily get out of their seats when they need to assist passengers.

SBS Transit’s acting chief executive officer Cheng Siak Kian said: “Our bus captains are on the frontline where they serve many commuters daily.

“Given the prolonged and uncertain situation with Covid-19, we think the protective shield is an idea worth exploring to enhance protection for our bus captains.”

The six buses that have these shields are services 19, 28, 147, 196, 198 and 249.

The shields were designed and installed by Moove Media, a wholly owned subsidiary of ComfortDelGro Corporation, which is also SBS Transit's parent company.

During the trial, bus drivers will provide feedback to enhance the design of the shield, and these results will be shared with the Land Transport Authority to assess the suitability of a fleet-wide installation.
