Tightened Covid-19 measures: What exercises and how many participants are allowed? Here's what you need to know

With the Government tightening Covid-19 safety regulations due to a rise of community infections, Sport Singapore (SportSG) has issued an advisory on what kind of sporting activities are allowed and under what circumstances.

With the Government tightening Covid-19 safe management measures in light of a rise of community infections, Sport Singapore (SportSG) has issued an advisory on what kind of sporting activities are allowed and under what circumstances.

On Friday (May 14), the government task force in charge of handling the pandemic announced that from May 16 until June 13, up to two people instead of five are allowed to gather for social activities and there may be only two social gatherings a day whether it is to a household or at a public place.

Here’s what you need to know about the advisory from the national sports body.

What is the maximum number of people allowed to exercise in a group?

From 16 May to June 13, sport and physical activities must be confined to groups of no more than two people. They should be at least 2m apart unless the nature of the sport does not permit so. In addition, a distance of at least 3m must be kept between groups of up to two individuals while exercising and playing sport.

What is the maximum number of people a sport facility can accommodate?

It will depend on its gross floor area, with one person per 16 sqm, up to a maximum of 50 persons. This is an increase from the previous 10 sqm per person.

Can there be large group sport and classes for physical activities?

For organised programmes and classes, multiple groups of two are allowed, up to a maximum of 30 participants or the capacity limit of the venue, whichever is lower. The groups of two are not to intermingle and must remain 3m apart.

If the activity is of high intensity where masks have to be removed, only two persons are allowed (including instructor or coach) and there can be no multiple groups of two.

Is swimming allowed?

Yes, you are allowed to swim outdoors as an individual or in a group of no more than two people, including yourself.

Can I play golf in a four-ball flight?

You can do so in two groups of two with masks on and a minimum distance of 3m have to be kpet between the two groups at all times. If masks cannot be worn throughout the game, only a two-ball flight is allowed.

Will I be allowed to play sports such as badminton, basketball and table tennis?

You are allowed to play sports such as badminton, basketball and table tennis in a group of no more than two people, that is, one versus one.

Masks must be worn at all times when playing sports indoors; masks may be taken off during strenuous activity outdoors, in a group of no more than two persons only.

I am from a family of four. Can we exercise outdoors together?

Individuals from the same household can exercise together, but should split into pairs and maintain safe distancing between individuals (2m) and different groups (3m) while exercising.

What sport and physical activities are allowed indoors?

Only low-intensity sport and physical activities are allowed in indoor sport and recreation facilities, and participants must wear masks at all times. The activity has to stop immediately, if any participant removes his or her mask.

What are some examples of low-intensity sports or physical activities?

These are activities that can be done with mask on at all times such as yoga, pilates, stretching exercises and taiji. There may have to be some modification to how it is done during this period, such as without the use of equipment.

How about gymnastics, martial arts and combat sports in an indoor setting similar to a studio?

Activities have to be modified to minimise contact as much as possible. Total grappling time must not be more than 15 minutes in total for each session.

Participants and instructors must wear masks at all times.

No common equipment such as punching pads, bags, dummies and boxing ring, where transmission risk is high, will be allowed. No weight, strength or resistance training or cardio training of any form will be allowed.

I am a freelance instructor and the gym/fitness/exercise studio that I provide my services to is closed. Can I conduct my classes for up to two people at home?

You are strongly discouraged from doing so, due to the high intensity and close contact nature of the activity.

What sport events are permitted?

Mass participation sport events will not be permitted. Organisers are to work with SportSG to cancel or postpone the events to a later date.

Which ActiveSG sport facilities are closed?

Please see https://www.myactivesg.com/Facilities/Sport-Centres/Facilities-Closure for the list of ActiveSG facilities that will remain closed from May 16 to June 13.
