SINGAPORE — The woman standing at the edge of the Singapore river, in front of the Fullerton Bay Hotel, appeared emotionally distressed.

When she told Mr Lam Siew Pak and Ms Maria Leong that she intended to jump into the river, they called the police before trying to calm the woman down, and eventually brought her to safety.

For their actions on March 14, Mr Lam and Ms Leong were honoured with Public-Spiritedness Awards by the Singapore Police Force on Friday (June 7).

They were among eight individuals recognised for their civic mindedness on Friday.

In a separate case, a group of five women were walking along Kim Pong Road in Tiong Bahru on March 22 when they were approached by another woman, who said that a man had performed an obscene act in her presence earlier.

The women — Ms Anthea Julia Chua, Ms Cheong Pei Lin Debbi, Ms Koh Huishan Deborah, Ms Hemaa Shruthi Sekar and Ms Ng Rui Ashlynna — along with the victim, located the man and followed him until the police arrived.

He was then arrested for public nuisance.

In another instance, Mr Muhammad Talip Ajman Ali was lauded for helping chase down a theft suspect on March 17 along Lower Delta Road.

Mr Talip noticed that the man had discarded a mobile phone during the chase, which was later found to be the victim’s mobile phone.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Gregory Tan Siew Hin said the actions of the eight allowed police to “quickly identify and investigate two suspects, and ensure the safety of the woman in distress”.

He added: “In the three cases, they stepped forward and helped to bring a quicker resolution to the incidents. Their actions are a good example for others and a testament to the strong sense of partnership between the Police and the community.”
