SINGAPORE — A 62-year-old man riding an electric bicycle sustained injuries on Wednesday (Oct 18) after colliding with a car during his morning commute along Bedok North Avenue 3.

The man was sent to Changi General Hospital unconscious and has been warded. The extent of his injuries is unclear.

TODAY understands that the driver, a male Singaporean in his 40s, was in a black Toyota car travelling eastward along New Upper Changi Road.

He was driving along the rightmost lane when the elderly man came by his right, TODAY understands.

The police said it was alerted to the incident at 7.52am on Monday. An ambulance was dispatched by the Singapore Civil Defence Force at about the same time.

E-bikes have been at the centre of a rising number of accidents in recent years.

In August, 78-year-old pedestrian Song Chee Keong died two days after a hit-and-run accident involving an e-bike along Jalan Bukit Merah. A 49-year-man was arrested in relation to the accident for causing death by a rash act, which carries a maximum penalty of five years' jail and a fine.

Last October, two young e-bikers, 25-year-old Ang Yee Fong and 18-year-old Ong Zi Quan were killed after a trailer truck slammed into them along West Coast Highway near Pandan Crescent. A third e-biker in the group, Marcus Loke, 17, was hospitalised for serious injuries.
