Ethnic Integration Policy in public housing still needed

SINGAPORE — The Ethnic Integration Policy (EIP) is still needed to ensure a good mix of residents of different races in different neighbourhoods and blocks in public housing, said Minister of State for National Development Maliki Osman.

SINGAPORE — The Ethnic Integration Policy (EIP) is still needed to ensure a good mix of residents of different races in different neighbourhoods and blocks in public housing, said Minister of State for National Development Maliki Osman.

Dr Maliki was responding to a question by Member of Parliament (Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC) Hri Kumar Nair in Parliament on whether the policy is still necessary.

The policy was implemented in 1989 to prevent the formation of ethnic enclaves and promote racial harmony in HDB estates.

The EIP limits are consistently applied across all ethnic groups.

Dr Maliki said currently only 11 per cent of HDB neighbourhoods are affected by the EIP limits.

He explained that for these neighbourhoods, flat sellers are usually still able to secure buyers from the eligible ethnic groups given the large volume of resale transactions annually. CHANNEL NEWSASIA
