SINGAPORE — Breaking his silence since allegations of sexual misconduct were levelled against him, former National University of Singapore (NUS) professor Jeremy Fernando apologised for the distress the events have caused and said he has filed a police report on a “related aspect of the situation”.

He did not provide more details on the police report.

In a statement sent to TODAY on Saturday (Oct 24), Dr Fernando said that he has so far refrained from commenting on the situation as it has been a period of reflection for him, and because investigations are underway.

“I now feel that given the seriousness of the allegations made against me, it is important that I make this statement to clarify my position, as much as I am able to at this point,” he added.

“First, I would like to apologise for the distress these events have caused to those caught up in this situation, and those closest to me. It was never my intention that my actions would affect them, and I am sorry for that.”

He added that he cooperated fully with the investigations conducted by NUS that led to his dismissal.

“Accordingly, I fully accept my dismissal on the grounds of a breach of NUS’ Code of Conduct,” he wrote.

He noted that NUS has since made a police report and that he is cooperating fully with this investigation and has provided a statement to the police.

He then added that he has also made his own report to the police on a related aspect of this situation.

“Given the ongoing nature of these investigations and because I understand I may be bound by certain obligations of confidentiality, I am unable to comment further on these other proceedings at this moment,” he said.
