SINGAPORE — Face masks featuring winning designs from a competition and one from an artist with cerebral palsy are going on sale, with the proceeds to support people with disabilities.
The design competition was organised by news media company Mediacorp and about 30,000 masks are going on sale at Lazada shopping site online.
Each mask, priced at S$10 before fees and tax, are available for pre-order and will be shipped from Aug 3.
Sales proceeds from these masks will go to the Mediacorp Enable Fund, a community fund supporting persons with disabilities and administered by SG Enable, an agency that works with persons with disabilities and their caregivers.
Mediacorp said in a press statement that more than 3,000 submissions were received for the Mask for the Nation competition
The competition opened in the last week of June and participants submitted their entries online by July 3.
Three winning designs were picked from a pool of 55 shortlisted submissions and were scored through public voting and by a panel of judges from Mediacorp and its corporate partners.
They were chosen because of their “beautiful portrayals of the ‘Singapore Together’ theme”, Mediacorp said.
The fourth design is a specially commissioned piece by Mr Ang Wei Lun, 31, an artist with cerebral palsy.
Mr Anwar Rafiee, 39, Ms Sharon Liew, 31, and Ms Soh Xin Hui, 25, who won the design competition will receive S$1,000 in cash or prizes each.
Their face mask designs will be sent for production alongside Mr Ang’s, which depicts Singapore as a modern city with well-known icons of the cityscape such as the Merlion, Singapore Flyer and Changi Airport.
Mr Ang already has two other artworks featured on the Singapore Together goodie-bag packs given out for this year’s National Day celebrations and on Our Heart for Singapore cards. The cards are a way for Singaporeans to pledge their support for the Covid-19 frontliners and to take actions towards various causes.
Mediacorp said that limited edition gift sets will also be produced with support from co-sponsor and automobile company BMW. The set will each have the masks with the four designs and a fifth design selected by BMW, all encased in a specially designed mask pouch.
A total of 550 of these limited edition sets will be available for sale at S$45 each on Lazada as well. The money will similarly go to the beneficiaries of the Mediacorp Enable Fund.
Mr Oliver Chong, Mediacorp’s head of marketing and communications, said that the company is delighted with the enthusiastic response to the design competition.
“Through this initiative, we have seen Singaporeans from all walks of life come together as we face the challenges ahead as a nation. We also look forward to the public’s generous support in purchasing the masks, which will go a long way in supporting persons with disabilities,” he said.
