SINGAPORE — Four people, the youngest of whom is a 16-year-old boy, were charged on Sunday (Sept 25) with rioting, after an alleged assault on a 17-year-old male youth in the wee hours of Saturday morning.

A fifth person — a 20-year-old man — will be charged on Wednesday with rioting in connection to the case, after he was arrested on Monday for his suspected involvement in the incident.

In a news release on Monday, the police said that they had received a call for assistance for a fight near Fullerton Road at about 4.45am on Sept 24.

On their arrival, the 17-year-old male was found to have sustained multiple cuts and wounds on his head, arms, shoulders and left knee.

He was unconscious when he was taken to the hospital, where he later regained consciousness.

The police said that his condition is now stable.

Through ground enquiries, follow-up investigations and the help of police cameras, officers from the Central Police Division and Police Operations Command Centre established the identities of the five alleged attackers — aged between 16 and 21 — and arrested them.

If found guilty of rioting, each of the five may be jailed for up to seven years and caned.

Investigations into the case are ongoing.

The police warned that they will not tolerate such brazen acts of violence and blatant disregard for the law. “We will spare no effort to apprehend such offenders and deal with them in accordance with the law.”

Earlier this month, the police said that nine people — the youngest of whom is aged 13 — had been charged with rioting while armed with a deadly weapon in connection to an assault case in Lengkok Bahru.

The eight male teenagers and a man — aged between 13 and 24 — were arrested after a 15-year-old boy was allegedly assaulted by a group of attackers who were armed with knives. The fight was believed to have started over a past dispute.
