GE2020: The Peoples Voice
GE2020: Voting for the first time and knowing next to nothing about the various political parties in Singapore? Get to know them and their new candidates in our General Election (GE) series.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE PARTY
It was founded in late 2018 by Mr Lim Tean, a lawyer who was a former secretary-general of the National Solidarity Party
The party’s main policy tagline is: “Make Singapore our home again”
Its proposals include returning Central Provident Fund monies to Singaporeans when they turn 55 and slashing the pay of ministers
The party has also spoken out about instituting affordable healthcare, scrapping the impending Goods and Services Tax hike and having a minimum wage
NEW CANDIDATES
Gilbert Goh, 59
The activist, who runs a non-governmental organisation counselling unemployed Singaporeans, previously contested in the 2011 and 2015 General Elections — first with the National Solidarity Party, then with the Reform Party.
He is expected to run in Pioneer Single Member Constituency (SMC) in this General Election.
He hopes to champion the issue of jobs and help the poor and homeless. Over the past few months, he has also teamed up with charitable organisations to give out items such as face masks and hand sanitiser to older residents across the island.
“I think my strength is reaching out to the ground. My charity work spans five to seven years, so I guess I’m a very grounded person.”
Mr Leong Sze Hian, 66
Mr Leong is a socio-political blogger, financial adviser and the party’s spokesperson on finance matters.
He is also currently embroiled in a libel suit brought against him by Prime Minister Lee Hsieng Loong. Mr Leong had shared an article on Facebook alleging that Mr Lee had helped Malaysia’s former premier Najib Razak to launder money from the country’s state fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).
Mr Prabu Ramachandran, 32
The financial adviser holds a bachelor’s degree in banking and finance, and handles private investments on a corporate level. He began his career in advertising and hopes to use his online knowhow in campaigning.
If elected as a Member of Parliament, he hopes to reduce bureaucracy and advocate for 0 per cent GST on essential goods, including internet services. The Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC candidate also hopes to champion the issue of jobs among constituents.
Ms Vigneswari V Ramachandran, 38
She has been a preschool teacher for 12 years — a sector that she said is often “undervalued and appreciated”. She graduated with a degree in business management and worked in a shipping company for three months, but left the job as she did not like it. She contested in the 2011 GE in Ang Mo Kio GRC under the Reform Party banner.
She hopes to raise issues such as the rising cost of living, which leads to some people not being able to afford Housing and Development Board flats, and increasing childcare fees.
Mr Mohammed Nassir Ismail, 63
The semi-retired business consultant is a certified trainer in middle management and frequently travelled around South-east Asia for work till 2017, when he returned to Singapore for good. He was a former international university lecturer as well.
His focus is on three issues this GE: The education system, jobs and the CPF system.
