MCCY, FAS hope Goal 2034 can be ‘national project’ involving many stakeholders

SINGAPORE — The aim of qualifying for the football World Cup in 2034 could become a “national project”, said the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) and the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY) in a joint statement on Tuesday (March 10).

FAS and MCCY called for stakeholders, including "all Singaporeans who enjoy football", to support Goal 2034, and to work towards it together.

SINGAPORE — The aim of qualifying for the football World Cup in 2034 could become a “national project”, said the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) and the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY) in a joint statement on Tuesday (March 10).

This comes less than a week after the ministry described the project as “not a goal of the Government, and that it is only a goal of the FAS”.

“FAS and MCCY would like to see many stakeholders — including all Singaporeans who enjoy football — jointly own and support Goal 2034, and work toward this vision together as a national project,” the statement said.

MCCY said it "welcomes and supports FAS's drive for excellence".

It added that the association has been refining its plans for Goal 2034 based on feedback received after briefing MCCY and key stakeholders on the project last year.

In Parliament last Friday, MCCY’s Senior Parliamentary Secretary Baey Yam Keng said the ministry had suggested that the FAS look at its mid-term and long-term development plans for youths in order to achieve Goal 2034.

The statement added that FAS and MCCY will continue meeting to "establish greater clarity and alignment" and that FAS is also engaging other stakeholders, including the Singapore National Olympic Council, to "further refine its vision and plans".

Singapore had previously set a target in 1998 of qualifying for the 2010 World Cup, which was unsuccessful.
