SINGAPORE — The police have arrested 10 people aged 19 to 29 for alleged payment fraud involving social carpooling service GrabHitch, with the sum amounting to more than S$41,800.

Three men, believed to be masterminds of the syndicate, will be charged in court on Wednesday (May 15) with abetment by conspiracy to cheat, the police said in a news release on Tuesday night.

The trio are aged between 20 and 22.

If convicted, they could be jailed up to 10 years and fined for each charge.

On April 17, ride-sharing firm Grab filed a police report after discovering irregularities in some of its drivers’ GrabHitch accounts.

Between February and April this year, it detected at least 13 driver accounts with more than 2,000 fraudulent transactions, the police said.

It is not known how these occurred and the police are unable to provide more details at this point.

The 10 people — nine men and a woman — were arrested on Monday by the Commercial Affairs Department.

Another four individuals — three men and a woman — are assisting with investigations.

The police seized mobile phones, debit cards and a thumb-drive.
