Haze outlook: As the plot thickens

SINGAPORE — The haze is picking up again in Singapore this morning (June 17). The three-hour Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) reading was 80 at noon, according to the National Environment Agency (NEA), up from 64 at 11am and 56 at 7am. The haze hit a high of 88 on Friday but had moderated to a moderate level of 70 at 7pm yesterday. The NEA does not issue health advisories for the general population for readings in the moderate range, but advises that “unusually sensitive people” consider reducing any prolonged or heavy exertion. According to the NEA website, PSI readings of 50 and below denote “good” air quality, “moderate” for 51-100 and “unhealthy” for 101-200. The three-hour PSI readings are calculated based on PM10 concentrations only. Meanwhile, the haze is set to worsen in Malaysia after parts of the country was shrouded by it yesterday from forest fires on Indonesia’s Sumatra island. The Air Pollutant Index (API) showed “unhealthy” levels of pollution between 101 and 129 in six areas yesterday, with the state of Malacca recording the worst API yesterday morning with a reading of 129, according to Malaysia’s Department of Environment (DOE). An API level of 101 to 200 is considered unhealthy, while 51 to 100 is moderate.
