Heritage Town Award contest opens

SINGAPORE — Residents in Chinatown, Tiong Bahru, Upper Serangoon and Moulmein will hope that this will be the second time lucky for their estate, after the National Heritage Board (NHB) yesterday launched an open call for nominations for the second Heritage Town Award.

SINGAPORE — Residents in Chinatown, Tiong Bahru, Upper Serangoon and Moulmein will hope that this will be the second time lucky for their estate, after the National Heritage Board (NHB) yesterday launched an open call for nominations for the second Heritage Town Award.

The inaugural award was given to Joo Chiat in 2011, as it beat competitors such as Chinatown, Tiong Bahru, Upper Serangoon and Moulmein by a wide margin.

The winning submission will receive the title of “Heritage Town” for the period of two years, as well as funding of S$100,000 to organise heritage-related activities for its residents.

Initiated in late 2010 to recognise and promote ownership of heritage by local communities, the NHB starts by seeking applications that are then assessed based on the historical significance and vision of the towns, supported with past activities and a proposed calendar of activities that promotes heritage. Citizens’ Consultative Committees (CCC) are encouraged to apply on behalf of their towns, while interested community and interest groups must submit their entries via the proposed heritage town’s CCC.

After nominations close in March next year, an assessment and evaluation will be carried out by an external jury, before the successful nominee is announced in the middle of the year. The applicants will be judged according to the following criteria: Proposed vision for their town; track record of heritage activities; proposed heritage activities for the coming year; and innovation of the proposed activities.

During its reign as Heritage Town, Joo Chiat honoured “Heritage Residents” who have contributed to Singapore, the community or their professions, and are currently residing within the old and new Joo Chiat constituency boundaries. An exhibition of memorable pictorial illustrations of Joo Chiat was also organised as part of the event.
