SINGAPORE — Indonesian influencer Una Dembler, who was filmed spitting on a fellow Bruno Mars concertgoer during a queue dispute, has apologised for her behaviour.
The incident happened at about 3pm last Friday (April 5) when ticket holders for the standing pen area were waiting in line for the second of the American singer's three concerts at the National Stadium.
In a video posted by Singaporean influencer Sabrina Sim last Friday, Ms Una is seen gesturing and arguing with several concertgoers seated in a queue to enter the standing pen.
After presumably being told to go to the back of the queue, she praises another man out of frame, saying "this boy is good" because he had nicely informed her to go to the back of the line.
"But he's not throwing rice on my body... okay?... I felt that."
She can be heard repeating "it's your rice, it's your rice", before spitting on one of them — later revealed to be Ms Sim — as her friend comes up to lead her away.
In her TikTok caption, Ms Sim, 22, explained that her group had been queueing behind a man who was going for the concert alone when Ms Una "just sat her buttocks down" in front of him, prompting them to "(stand) up for him and (call) her out".
"She told us, 'I'm waiting for my friend'," Ms Sim wrote. "So we told her nicely, 'This is the front of the queue though, you can go to the back of the queue and wait for your friend'.
"But clearly, she wasn't too happy with being called out even though she was the one who shamelessly tried to cut the queue. Got spit on in the end...
"All I can say is... Those attending on April 5, please be considerate and try your best not to be selfish to others attending the concert."
The TikTok video, which was posted last Friday, has since garnered 2.4 million views, 62,800 likes and 3,670 comments as of Monday afternoon, with many expressing sympathy for Ms Sim and encouraging her to report the incident to the police.
Online users quickly tracked down and identified Ms Una as the perpetrator, flooding her social media accounts with negative comments.
Over the weekend on Saturday, she responded to the backlash in an Instagram Story, claiming that the video circulating was "not 100 per cent true".
She had not intended to join or cut the queue, she added, but was waiting for a friend who had gone to the bathroom.
Ms Una wrote: "Suddenly I felt someone throw rice at my hair and body several times. Then there was a nice guy who told me that this was the line for Bruno Mars, and I immediately stood up and left the queue but the girl still tried to throw rice (at) me.
"I was mad and it is wrong to get emotional and spit at her. Sadly, I don't have the video (of her) throwing rice (at) me.
"Please hear my side, too. I know I was wrong to spit on her but I didn't mean to cut the queue. I will learn from this and I really regret this. I'm sorry... So sorryyy."
Speaking to TODAY on Monday, Ms Sim shared that Ms Una had actually spat on her twice, with the first time not being captured on video.
Ms Sim and her partner, who held Priority Standing tickets, had been queueing for their standing pen since 11am last Friday alongside some Silver VIP ticket holders when they noticed Ms Una sitting by a tree next to the queue and taking selfies.
"Things started to get serious when (Ms Una) inched her butt backwards towards the boy who had a Silver VIP pass and was solo in the queue since 11am with all of us," she said. "It felt like she wanted to cut his queue because he seemed like a more vulnerable party compared to everyone else (who was) in groups or pairs."
However, despite the boy telling her that she was in the middle of a queue for the standing pen, Ms Una insisted that she would wait for her friend there.
Ms Sim recounted: "Witnessing this whole ordeal made me feel bad for the boy who was alone and so I intervened and said to her: 'Why not you wait for your friend at the back of the queue? Because this is the front of the queue.'
The back-and-forth went on for around two minutes before Ms Una spat on her face, Ms Sim said, which was not the incident captured in the video.
But Ms Sim "decided to let it go" as Ms Una left after spitting on her. Nearby concertgoers also showed her kindness by offering her tissues, hand sanitiser and wet wipes after witnessing the altercation.
However, Ms Una later returned with a friend to "confront" Ms Sim. This was when another pair of concertgoers behind Ms Sim in the queue decided to begin filming Ms Una.
Ms Una then told her friend that Ms Sim had thrown her rice at her, referring to a box of rice in a plastic bag on the floor which Ms Sim had for lunch. She also said that people had thrown things on her hair and body.
"We did buy food for lunch because sitting in the hot weather since 11am is a tedious task, but no one threw anything at her at all," Ms Sim told TODAY.
Following Ms Una's public apology, many online users backed Ms Sim up, calling Ms Una's rice-throwing claim a "lame and ridiculous excuse".
Indonesian online users also left comments on Ms Sim's posts to apologise to the Singaporean influencer for the "embarrassing" incident.
One top comment in Indonesian read: "Stop bringing shame to other people's countries!!! Which Singapore person would dare to throw food at you Unaaa!!"
Others claimed that Ms Una had deleted the Instagram Story before its expiry, saying that this was proof of her lying. Instagram Stories typically expire after 24 hours.
Ms Una later reached out to Ms Sim on Instagram on Saturday night, apologising for not messaging earlier as she had just found Ms Sim's Instagram account.
Ms Una reiterated that she had not meant to cut the queue and was waiting for her friend, writing: "With this event, I will be (a) better person. I'm really sorry, once again. Please let me know what I can do to make your day better."
She added that as she "doesn't speak English really well", they might have had some miscommunication.
Ms Sim told TODAY on Monday: "Things could've been resolved if she had calmly spoken to us and understood why we wanted her to 'wait for her friend' elsewhere, away from the queue. We all remained really calm the entire time and did not appreciate her aggression nor her disrespect."
A she has already received a direct apology, Ms Sim "hopes people can forgive Una and move on from this incident".
"I appreciate that people are standing by my side but I don't appreciate the rude and disrespectful comments made towards her country, race, religion, sexuality or gender," she added. "It is a lesson for all of us to learn — concertgoers should know that there's such a thing as concert ethics."
TODAY has reached out to Ms Una for comment.
