SINGAPORE — The Istana could play host to the upcoming historic meeting between US president Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, said a South Korean news report on Tuesday (May 29).

South Korean newspaper JoonAng Ilbo quoted unidentified diplomatic sources as saying that the Istana was under consideration, given "the magnitude and sensitivity of the summit".

The Istana is the official residence and office of the Singapore President, and is also the working office of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

While the exact location of the summit — initially scheduled for June 12 — has not yet been known, other locations thrown up as possible venues include the Shangri-La Hotel, and Marina Bay Sands.

The JoonAng Ilbo report comes amid other media reports of top North Korean officials travelling to both Singapore and the US, the latest indication that the on-again-off-again summit might proceed.

Mr Trump had called off the summit last week, but relented a day later with officials from both countries meeting to work out details.

The US and North Korean leaders were scheduled to meet in Singapore to discuss the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula, among other issues.
