Slowdown on East-West MRT line as jewellery causes train door to jam

SINGAPORE — Trains from Joo Koon to Dover were travelling at slower speeds this morning (Jan 14) because of a door fault at 8am, SMRT said.

In a statement today, SMRT’s corporate information and communications vice-president Patrick Nathan said passengers were asked to alight at Chinese Garden MRT Station and board two additional trains that had been deployed to continue their journey.

“Our technicians later retrieved some jewellery pieces (an earring and two beads), which caused the door to jam,” said Mr Nathan.

Commuters caught off guard by the delay took to social media sites today, including Facebook and Twitter, to vent their frustrations.

Some claimed that the additional travelling time had caused them to be late for work or school, while others uploaded pictures of crowded train platforms at MRT stations on Twitter.
