SINGAPORE – A new record has been set in the Singapore Book of Records as part of celebrations to mark Singapore’s Golden Jubilee.

Residents in Bishan North thronged the Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park with one aim in mind: to form the largest SG50 logo using opened umbrellas in the national colours of red and white.

“We don’t feel the heat; we just feel proud and we just feel that it is something that will be remembered and be part of history,” said one female resident. “It’s quite coordinated, there are marked out areas and all we have do are simple actions like raising the umbrellas,” added another resident.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong led the formation, and the record was set with 3,050 participants.

“So many residents said they wanted to take part so we expanded and grew our capacity,” said Senior Minister of State for Finance and Transport Josephine Teo, who is also MP for Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC. “We wanted to find a celebration that was both meaningful and also one in which all families and friends can take part in together, so that was a very tall order.

Even with a new record to its name, PM Lee said Singapore has always been setting another record of its own. “There’s one record which we have set - which I don’t think they have in the Guinness Book and they don’t have such a category - and that is the most successful nation-building experience and that, we have been doing, not just this afternoon, but these last 50 years - 1965 to where we are today,” said Mr Lee.

Mr Lee added that Singapore had come a long way and urged residents to work together for Singapore’s future. CHANNEL NEWSASIA
