SINGAPORE — Nine people, the youngest of whom is aged 13, have been charged with rioting while armed with a deadly weapon in connection to an assault case in Lengkok Bahru earlier this month, the police said on Thursday (Sept 15).
The eight male teenagers and a man — who are aged between 13 and 24 — were arrested after a 15-year-old boy was allegedly assaulted by a group of attackers who were armed with knives. The fight was believed to have started over a past dispute.
If convicted, the nine may be jailed up to 10 years and caned, the police said in a new release on Thursday.
The police were alerted to the case in the Redhill area at about 8.45pm on Sept 2.
The victim suffered multiple injuries and was conscious when he was taken to the hospital.
Police officers from the Criminal Investigation Department and Clementi Police Division arrested the nine people between Sept 3 and 8 after ground enquiries and with the help of images from police cameras.
"Knives, which were believed to have been used during the incident, were seized as case exhibits," the police said.

In a video that made its rounds on social media on Wednesday, a group of people can be seen running across a road from a bus stop where a body is lying on the ground.
After that, the nine in the group — who are all wearing dark-coloured tops — are seen calmly walking along a footpath as members of the public attended to the injured boy.
At least one person is seen trying to move the boy on his back.
The 42-second video posted on the Singapore Incidents Facebook page then ends as the group of nine make their way towards a void deck of a public housing block.
Police investigations into the case are ongoing.
The police warned that they will spare no effort to apprehend such offenders and deal with them in accordance with the law.
