Man, 25, charged with failing to enlist in NS for more than 3 years

SINGAPORE — A 25-year-old man was charged in court on Monday (Jan 21) for defaulting on his National Service (NS) obligations for more than three years.

SINGAPORE — A 25-year-old man was charged in court on Monday (Jan 21) for defaulting on his National Service (NS) obligations for more than three years.

Zaley Cheng Xi Xiong faces two charges under the Enlistment Act. Court documents showed that he failed to report for enlistment into full-time NS between June 10, 2014 and Aug 30, 2017 — about three years and three months.

He allegedly remained outside Singapore without a valid exit permit for that period as well. It was not stated where he travelled to at the time.

Cheng is now out on a S$10,000 bail and will return to court on Feb 4.

If convicted of failing to report for enlistment, he can be jailed up to three years, fined up to S$10,000, or both. The same punishment applies to staying outside the country without a valid exit permit when one is required to enlist.

In September last year, Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen said that over the past 10 years, there have been an average of 350 NS defaulters every year. They either failed to register or enlist for NS, or did not return to Singapore when their exit permits expired.
