SINGAPORE — A 64-year-old man has been arrested and will be charged after allegedly attacking a man he knew with two cleavers along Jalan Bukit Merah on Tuesday (March 14) morning.

The police said in a statement on Wednesday night that they were alerted at 11.30am on Tuesday to the alleged assault on a 48-year-old man.

TODAY understands that the alleged attack took place at the ground floor of a public housing block.

Early investigations showed that both men were known to each other, though it is not known what is the condition of the younger man and what is the nature of their relationship.

The older man was arrested within an hour of the report after the police established his identity with the aid of images from both surveillance and police cameras.

After his arrest, two cleavers were seized as case exhibits.

TODAY understands that the man was arrested near the scene of the alleged crime.

He will be charged on Thursday with voluntarily causing hurt with a dangerous weapon.

The police said that they “take a serious view of violent offences committed in public”, and anyone who endangers the public’s sense of safety and security will be “dealt with firmly”.

If found guilty of causing hurt with a dangerous weapon, an offender can be jailed up to seven years, or fined, or caned, or be given any combination of these punishments.
