SINGAPORE — A man in his 40s is assisting police with investigations into a fight that broke out on Lavender Street on July 27.
Meanwhile, Moulmein-Kallang GRC MP Edwin Tong said he is working with the police to patrol the area more closely.
A businessman suffered severe injuries, including stab wounds, after a brawl broke out at a pub on Lavender Street.
The victim said the fight involved as many as 10 men with choppers and knives.
The area is known for its nightspots, and over the years, the area’s MP said residents have complained about noise and rowdiness in the vicinity, although not frequently.
Mr Edwin Tong, MP for Moulmein-Kallang GRC and deputy chair of the GPC for Home Affairs & Law, said: “I gathered that it was a spur of the moment fight and it was not one of those planned events where they came armed with weapons.
“I think the disagreement erupted between patrons, and some of the staff members got involved and I understand that there were a couple of injuries, and that the police were at the scene very quickly after that.”
While this was an isolated case, Mr Tong added that the incident was one of the most serious because of the level of injuries and number of people involved.
He said: “But at the same time, I think there has not been a wave of these cases, so much so that we feel that there is a pattern.
“I think (if) there have been, it’s been controlled and I think the police have been working very closely with us to be on the scene very quickly, and also to step up patrols to try to deter this from happening.”
Food court owners at Lavender Food Square said the area does see some commotion from time to time.
The stall holders hope more frequent police patrol could help reduce such incidents. CHANNEL NEWSASIA
