Man to be charged after allegedly using chopper to slash another man’s limbs at Bukit Merah

SINGAPORE — A 28-year-old man will be charged on Friday (July 15) after he allegedly used a chopper to slash another man’s hands and legs during a dispute along Jalan Bukit Merah.

SINGAPORE — A 28-year-old man will be charged on Friday (July 15) after he allegedly used a chopper to slash another man’s hands and legs during a dispute along Jalan Bukit Merah.

The police said that they responded to several calls of a fight on Thursday at about 4pm, adding that a trail of blood was seen at Block 116 Jalan Bukit Merah.

Initial investigations found that the alleged attacker was involved in a dispute with a 27-year-old man. He then was said to have used a chopper to slash the younger man’s hands and legs.

The victim was taken conscious to the hospital and the alleged attacker was arrested at the scene.

The suspect will be charged with voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapon.

If convicted, he can be jailed for up to 15 years and fined or caned.

The police warned that they do not tolerate such “brazen acts of violence and blatant disregard of the law”.

“We will spare no effort to apprehend such offenders and deal with them in accordance with the law.”

Just last month, a 50-year-old man was arrested at Block 111 Jalan Bukit Merah after he allegedly slashed the head of another man with a knife near a coffee shop.

Earlier in April, Mr Desmond Tan, then-Minister of State for Home Affairs, said that number of knife-related crimes involving murder, robbery, rioting and serious hurt has remained "relatively constant" over the past five years.

His comments were made at a parliamentary session following a spate of crimes involving the use of knives and swords in March this year.
