SINGAPORE — A 33-year-old man will be charged on Wednesday (Jan 20) for his alleged involvement in a case of outrage of modesty as well as criminal trespass.

In a press statement on Tuesday, the police said that they were alerted to a case on Monday at around noon when a man alleged that “someone wanted to beat him”.

When the police arrived at the scene, the man was found to have locked himself up inside his home.

There were two people outside the residential unit who were observed by officers to be confronting the man.

They were then advised to stay away from the unit.

The police did not state the location of the unit and TODAY has reached out to them for more details.

Preliminary investigation by the authorities showed that the man had allegedly entered an unsecured neighbouring unit and had allegedly kissed a woman several times while she was sleeping alone inside.

The woman woke up and screamed at the man to leave the unit before contacting her family member for assistance.

Police said that the man then went back to his home and locked himself inside.

Despite officers’ repeated calls to open the door, the man refused to do so and threatened to jump down from his apartment.

“Special Operations Command and Singapore Civil Defence Force resources were (then) activated,” the police said.

After two hours of engagement, the police said that the man “finally heeded” the officers’ instructions and opened his door.

He was then taken to the Changi General Hospital and referred to the Institute of Mental Health for psychiatric assessment.

If convicted for outrage of modesty, the man can be jailed up to two years, fined, caned or a combination of these penalties. If convicted for criminal trespass, the man can be jailed up to three months or fined up to S$1,500, or both.
