SINGAPORE — A 32-year-old man was fined S$5,000 on Thursday (Jan 20) for assaulting another man who had tried to intervene in his dispute with a fellow nightclub patron.

Tyson Wayne Plant, a British citizen, pleaded guilty to one count of voluntarily causing hurt to Mr Nick Macaulay, a Singaporean, three years ago.

Plant's LinkedIn page shows that he is a managing consultant at engineering and technical workforce solutions provider NES Fircroft.

The court heard that he had gone to the now-defunct Kilo Lounge in the Tanjong Pagar area on Aug 18, 2018 at about 1am with a friend.

The pair consumed alcoholic drinks there, before he got into a verbal dispute with other unknown patrons outside the nightclub about two hours later. One of them then punched Plant in the face.

Mr Macaulay, who was also standing outside Kilo Lounge at the time, tried to de-escalate the situation by intervening. But as he began to walk away, Plant approached him and headbutted his face.

Mr Macaulay, now aged 30, suffered a fractured nasal bone as a result of Plant’s actions. He also separately broke his finger.

He sought medical attention that same day at Changi General Hospital and was given 14 days of medical leave.

Around May last year, Plant paid him S$12,000 as compensation. Plant’s lawyer Yusfiyanto Yatiman from law firm Rajah & Tann told the court that this was for medical fees, transport and “goodwill”.

The prosecution left the sentence up to the courts, while Mr Yusfiyanto argued that his client committed the offence on the spur of the moment.

For voluntarily causing hurt, Plant could have been jailed for up to two years or fined up to S$5,000, or punished with both.
