SINGAPORE — A man seen in a viral video attempting to force open the doors of an MRT train has returned to court after he was remanded at the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) for a medical examination.

On Thursday (Dec 21), Vanessa Wang Zi Qi, 47, who is identified in court documents as a male person, appeared in court to face two charges of public nuisance and one charge of voluntarily causing hurt.

Court documents stated that Wang allegedly caused "common annoyance" to MRT commuters at Braddell MRT Station on Nov 27, when he tried to pull open the MRT train doors.

Two days later, Wang purportedly caused annoyance again by shouting and pulling open the MRT train doors at Ang Mo Kio MRT Station.

He allegedly caused hurt to a person by kicking a man at the same station.

During the hearing on Thursday, the prosecution stated that the IMH report had already been filed but it was not ready to offer any plea deal yet since Wang might face more charges for being a public nuisance.

The prosecution thus sought an adjournment and offered Wang bail of S$10,000 with conditions such as not committing any offence and following up with medical appointments where required.

District Judge Wong Li Tein asked if Wang had any indication of plea at this time but his defence counsel Jared Lee said that there was none.

When asked by Mr Lee if his client's attendance could be dispensed with for the next hearing, the judge did not grant the request, since the prosecution stated that it is "likely" that fresh charges will be tendered at the next hearing.

Wang will return to court on Jan 3.
