SINGAPORE — A 53-year-old man who attempted to steal a police officer’s gun, spat at another, and punched his own son in three separate incidents was jailed one year and two months on Thursday (July 19).

Four other charges of criminal intimidation, voluntarily causing hurt, and verbally abusing two police officers were taken into consideration for Mohd Omar Abdul Rahim’s sentencing.

On Dec 12, 2016, Omar and his son, who is now 20-years-old, were having an argument when Omar smashed his son’s fish tank.

When police officers arrived at the scene, they spoke to Omar to find out what happened and asked that he provide his identity card. He slipped and fell while he was retrieving it.

As the officer was helping him back up, Omar tried to grab the officer’s revolver with both his hands, pushing the gun holster in the process. The revolver was loaded with ammunition at the time.

The officer immediately pushed Omar away and secured his gun. Omar was then placed under arrest, during which he remained aggressive and shouted at the officer to shoot him.

In another incident on 21 Oct last year, the police received a call at around 7pm about a man wearing a T-shirt and underwear who was attacking people in Jurong East.

Three police officers were sent to the scene. When one of them approached Omar, he noticed that Omar reeked of alcohol and was behaving aggressively.

Although the officers tried to calm him down, he remained uncooperative and shouted vulgarities. He then suddenly turned to one of them and spat at the officer’s left cheek. He was subsequently arrested.

Most recently, on March 23 this year, Omar got into another fight with his son, who had previously taken out a personal protection order against Omar in January.

His son and daughter then called the police. When officers arrived at the scene, the two men were still arguing. During the argument, Omar’s son pointed his finger at him, which led to him punching the younger man once at his right lip area.

For assaulting or using criminal force to commit theft, Omar could have been jailed up to seven years and caned.

For using criminal force on a public servant to deter him from his duty, he could have been jailed up to four years and/or fined. And for contravening a protection order, he could have been jailed up to six months and/or fined up to S$2,000.
