SINGAPORE — The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) will celebrate the Lunar Year of the Monkey next year by issuing a collection of special coins that carry the almanac’s symbol, announced the central bank today (Nov 20).

There will be nine versions of the 2016 Year of the Monkey Coins available from Jan 1, including a 1kg coin made of 999 fine silver, which is the largest silver coin in Singapore. Selected premium sets will include a unique 8-sided floral-shaped ingot featuring a family of monkeys.

The coins are part of the third Chinese Almanac coin series issued by the MAS. The monkey illustrated on the coins has a “playful and curious disposition” and carries a peach to symbolise longevity, the central bank said. The peony, a traditional Chinese symbol of blessings and festive cheer, is featured on the body of the monkey.

Additionally, following the successful issuance of the first and second Chinese Almanac puzzle coin sets in the past two years, the MAS will be issuing another set of the Almanac series puzzle coins.

The 2016 Chinese Almanac puzzle coin set will feature a centre piece surrounded by the 12 coins, each depicting the design of the animals in the third Chinese Almanac series. The centre piece features a local orchid hybrid, created in celebration of Singapore’s Jubilee, said the MAS.

Interested consumers must place an order at the Singapore Mint by Dec 15.
