SINGAPORE — In the run-up to Singapore’s 49th birthday, close to 150 pioneers attended the Pioneer Generation Tribute cum National Day Observance Ceremony this morning (Aug 8), graced by Minister of Communications and Information (MCI) Yaacob Ibrahim.

Prominent figures such as the former chairman of the Board of Film Censors Mr Raymond Huang and former Radio and TV announcer Mr Norman Lim were present.

They were among the representatives from the MCI, statutory boards and media, information and communications, library and design sectors who were at the ceremony. The pioneers were treated to a tribute video and a comical skit, and also received personalised mementos.

In Dr Yaacob Ibrahim’s speech, he recollected memories from the past, citing how “our pioneers have contributed to the growth and development of our respective sectors...in big ways and small.”

“As we celebrate our 50th year of independence next year, we must remember the people who rose to the challenge of nation building at a time of great uncertainty. The people who worked tirelessly to transform Singapore into a place we can, now, proudly call home,” said Dr Yaacob.
