SINGAPORE — A restaurant in Singapore gives diners a choice to celebrate a divorce if they want to do so, never mind that most families will find divorce a traumatising outcome.
As any Singaporean foodie worth their salt knows, it is not uncommon for restaurant reservation forms to include a range of "special occasion" options that one can select for a meal, such as birthdays, anniversaries and bachelorette parties.
However, as online users recently discovered, when making a booking at Mexican-Indian casual restaurant Ms Maria & Mr Singh located on Craig Road in Tanjong Pagar, diners may pick the option of "divorce" under special occasions.
A post on online forum Reddit by user "flying-kai" last Sunday (Feb 25) was what first brought this little detail to the attention of the wider public.
Sharing a screenshot of the restaurant's booking site on dining platform SevenRooms, the user wrote in a separate comment: "Was making a reservation for Ms Maria & Mr Singh when I came across this feature on their reservation system lol (laugh out loud).
"Not gonna lie, was very tempted to pick divorce just to see what would happen."
As of Wednesday afternoon, the post has attracted 1,500 upvotes and 56 comments, with comments calling it "super hilarious".
Amused Redditors were quick to offer up suggestions of what checking the "divorce" box might entail, including a private dining room, a special menu, legal services and separate bills.
One top comment read: "Hot drinks not available. Tableware to be replaced with disposables. Manager available as witness (for an) additional fee. 30 per cent discount for next visit (only available for engagement)."
In response, a Reddit user imagined service crew from Chinese hot-pot chain Haidilao appearing at the diner's table to sing a "Happy Divorce" song in the same style as the chain's pompous birthday celebrations, which are often accompanied by booming speakers and neon signs.
Others joked that Ms Maria and Mr Singh themselves used to be "Mr and Mrs Singh", giving them "enough experience to add in the divorce option".
The two titular characters are the foundation for the restaurant's concept, which is "a reflection of a love affair between a Mexican home town girl and an Indian city boy", its website states.
The menu is split into music-inspired and popular culture-inspired sections, covering multiple stages of romance from "love at first bite" to dishes "for a wedding or maybe a funeral". Might this be hinting at the possible death of the fictitious love affair?
While we might never know the truth of Ms Maria and Mr Singh's romance, their creator and Michelin-starred chef Gaggan Anand, 46, has divorced twice.
However, the idea for the unconventional option seems to have come not from the chef, but his Singapore partner and hospitality group The Proper Concepts Collective.
Its other food-and-beverage offerings include sushi and sake bar Rappu, popular steakhouse The Feather Blade and Japanese kaiseki and cocktail bar Goho — all of which have the same "divorce" option in their online reservation forms.
Co-founder Leong Sheen Jet told The Straits Times on Tuesday that the group began offering the option after launching Ms Maria & Mr Singh in Singapore in 2022.
Putting Redditors' curiosity to rest, he said that diners who choose divorce as an occasion will receive the Mexican dish huevos divorciados ("divorced eggs" in English) as well as either dessert or alcoholic shots.
