SINGAPORE — One of the two locally-transmitted Covid-19 cases in Singapore reported on Tuesday (Dec 1) is a 66-year-old Singaporean woman who works as a cleaner at the transit area of Changi Airport Terminal 3. The other is a foreign worker residing in a dormitory.

In its evening update of the coronavirus situation, the Ministry of Health (MOH) said that the woman’s infection was detected through its fortnightly Rostered Routine Testing of workers who are at the frontlines of Covid-19 operations.

The woman was taken to the hospital after she tested positive. She did not have any symptoms and has no links to confirmed cases. MOH said that the woman’s serological test result was negative, which “indicates a likely current infection”.

Her home was on Yishun Ring Road, where she lives with her husband who is unemployed.

“At work, she dons personal protective equipment, including a face mask, face shield, gloves and gown,” MOH said, adding that her earlier swabs done as part of the routine testing were all negative.

The ministry added that all the identified close contacts of the woman have been isolated and placed on quarantine.

They will be tested at the start and end of their quarantine period so that asymptomatic cases may be detected.

The one other locally transmitted case is a foreign worker living in a dormitory. He was detected through MOH’s “proactive surveillance”.

The man was taken to the hospital after he tested positive for the coronavirus. He is asymptomatic.

“All (of) his close contacts at the dormitory and his workplace have been isolated and placed on quarantine,” MOH said.

Overall, the number of new cases in the community has remained low with a total of five cases in the past week who have no known links to other infections so far.

OTHER CASES REPORTED

The two locally transmitted cases were among 10 new Covid-19 infections announced by MOH on Tuesday.

The remaining eight cases are all imported. They include a work pass holder who arrived from Japan and five work permit holders with travel histories to Indonesia and Myanmar. One other case is a long-term visit pass holder who arrived here from Russia.

They all had no symptoms and had been placed on stay-home notices upon their arrival.

MOH said that the one remaining case is a special pass holder who had arrived from Indonesia. The 43-year-old man was arrested by the Singapore Police Force’s Police Coast Guard for his suspected involvement in a prior case.

“He was tested for Covid-19 infection and isolated until he was (taken) to the hospital when his result came back positive,” the ministry said.

UPDATES ON REMAINING CASES

The total number of infections in Singapore now stands at 58,228.

Of these, 58,139 people have fully recovered and have been discharged from hospitals or community care facilities, including five on Tuesday.

There are still 29 patients in hospitals and most are in stable condition or improving. No one is in intensive care.

Another 31 patients are isolated at community facilities. They have mild symptoms or are clinically well but still tested positive for Covid-19.

Twenty-nine people have died from complications due to the disease.
