SINGAPORE — The sole Covid-19 case in the community here, the first in more than two weeks, is a 39-year-old Singaporean woman who had gone on a Southern Islands tour with two other families — totalling 12 people in all.

The Ministry of Health (MOH) said on Monday (Dec 21) that investigations are ongoing to assess if there had been any breach of safe management regulations.

The woman — who had no symptoms — was detected when she was tested for the coronavirus before an upcoming cruise trip.

She was taken to the National Centre for Infectious Diseases the next day, when her test result came back positive.

“The National Public Health Laboratory has run further tests to verify that she is positive for Covid-19. Her serological test result is pending,” MOH said.

The woman lives on Jurong West Street 93 and had been at work at Ruising Chemicals — located at 18 Boon Lay Way — before her test result was confirmed.

Epidemiological investigations are in progress, MOH said.

In the meantime, all her identified close contacts, including her family members and co-workers, have been isolated and placed on quarantine and will be tested at the start and end of their quarantine period so that the ministry can detect asymptomatic cases.

“We will also conduct serological tests on her household and family contacts to determine if she could have been infected by them,” MOH said.

Overall, the number of new cases in the community has remained low with a total of one case in the past week who is not linked to other confirmed cases so far.

NINE IMPORTED CASES

The Singaporean woman is among 10 new Covid-19 cases announced by MOH on Monday. The remaining nine are all imported.

They include:

  • Three Singaporeans who returned from India and the United Kingdom

  • Two work permit holders employed in Singapore who arrived from Indonesia and Myanmar

  • One student’s pass holder from Myanmar

  • Three short-term visit pass holders who are crew members of separate vessels that arrived from Indonesia. These men had not disembarked from their ships until they were taken to a quarantine facility or hospital

All nine imported cases had been placed on stay-home notices or isolated upon their arrival in Singapore and they were tested for the coronavirus.

UPDATES ON REMAINING CASES

The total number of infections in Singapore now stands at 58,432.

Of these, 58,287 people have fully recovered and have been discharged from hospitals or community care facilities, including eight on Monday.

There are still 46 patients in hospitals and most are in stable condition or improving. No one is in intensive care.

Another 70 patients are isolated at community facilities. They have mild symptoms or are clinically well but still tested positive for Covid-19.

Twenty-nine people have died from complications due to the disease.
