291 new Covid-19 cases in Singapore, including 11 in the community: MOH

SINGAPORE — Singapore has confirmed 291 new cases of Covid-19, said the Ministry of Health (MOH) in a press release on Saturday (June 27).

SINGAPORE — The Ministry of Health (MOH) on Saturday (June 27) confirmed 291 new cases of Covid-19, including 11 new community cases.

Five of the 11 cases are Singaporeans, two are work pass holders and four are work permit holders.

The majority of the rest of the new cases are work permit holders residing in foreign worker dormitories, MOH said in its media release.

The total number of Covid-19 cases in Singapore now stands at 43,246.

Among the community cases, three of the five Singaporeans are from a family cluster, with two adults in their 30s and a five-year-old child.

They were contacts of a previously confirmed case who had been tested because he works at a dormitory. All three in the family had no symptoms and had already been quarantined.

The fourth Singaporean, a 66-year-old man, was detected due to the authorities’ testing of persons working at dormitories, even though he was asymptomatic.

Investigations are still ongoing for the fifth Singaporean, a 63-year-old woman who had onset of symptoms on June 19.

For the six work pass and work permit holders, two were identified as contacts of past cases and under quarantine when they were tested.

The other four were detected as part of the screening for workers in essential services.

MOH said that overall, the number of new cases in the community has gone up, from an average of four cases a day in the week before, to an average of six a day in the past week.

The number of community cases with no known sources of infection has also increased, from an average of two a day in the week before, to an average of three daily in the past week.

MOH stressed: “With more activities resuming… it is critical that we continue to exercise caution to keep the number of new cases under control.

“All of us must adhere to safe management principles… We urge everyone to continue to exercise personal responsibility and not put the community at risk.”

FOREIGN WORKER DORMITORIES

Infections among work permit holders residing in dormitories, including in factory-converted dormitories, continue to be detected because of extensive testing, MOH said.

Of the new cases, 97 per cent are linked to known clusters, while the rest are pending contact tracing.

UPDATES ON REST OF THE CASES

In all, 37,163 people have fully recovered from Covid-19 and have been discharged from hospitals or community care facilities, including the 338 on Saturday.

There are still 174 patients in hospitals. Of these, most are stable or improving, and one is in critical condition under intensive care.

MOH said that 5,883 patients are isolated and cared for at community facilities. These are those who have mild symptoms, or are clinically well but still test positive for Covid-19.

Twenty-six people have died from complications due to Covid-19.

MOH said that a 27 year-old male Bangladeshi died on June 25 and the cause of death was multiple injuries consistent with those resulting from a fall. He was an earlier confirmed case whose infection was detected on June 6. His death was not part of the 26 recorded for Covid-19 since he died from a fall from height.
