SINGAPORE — A new Covid-19 treatment centre has begun operation at Hall 9 of the Singapore Expo Convention and Exhibition Centre at Changi, with about 600 beds dedicated for children and their caregivers, and 224 beds for seniors.

More family rooms are available at Hall 9 of Singapore Expo, so that children infected with Covid-19 may move in with their caregivers.
SINGAPORE — A new Covid-19 treatment centre has begun operation at Hall 9 of the Singapore Expo Convention and Exhibition Centre at Changi, with about 600 beds dedicated for children and their caregivers, and 224 beds for seniors.
The latest addition to the existing ones in Halls 7 to 10 at the venue means that there are now more than 2,500 beds in all at the Singapore Expo, making it the largest treatment facility here.
Health Minister Ong Ye Kung said in a Facebook post on Monday (Feb 14) that the treatment centre at Hall 9 is “designed to take care of the most vulnerable in our community”.
This means that it will have about 600 beds dedicated for children and their caregivers, and 224 beds for seniors.
“As the Omicron variant is more likely to infect children than the Delta variant, this new facility will complement our hospitals in providing care to paediatric patients should they need to be hospitalised,” Mr Ong added.
The minister said last week that children aged five to 11 have the highest infection rate here, at about 67 per 100,000 of the population.
The provisions to care for children notwithstanding, Mr Ong said on Monday that the “best defence is still to get our children vaccinated” against Covid-19.

Infrastructure consultancy Surbana Jurong and their working partners began converting the halls at the Singapore Expo to provide treatment for Covid-19 patients in April 2020.
In all, Singapore now has about 4,500 Covid-19 treatment facility beds across the island, Mr Ong said.
Other facilities are located in places such as the F1 Pit Building, Sengkang General Hospital and the Yishun and Ren Ci community hospitals.
