SINGAPORE – National swimmer Joseph Schooling could be set for a record fifth Sportsman of the Year accolade at the 2018 Singapore Sports Awards (SSA) on July 18.

The 23-year-old, who clinched a historic first for Singapore when he won the 100m butterfly gold at the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil, is among three finalists for the prestigious award.

He will be up against wushu exponent Jowen Lim, a double gold medallist at the 2017 SEA Games, and cyclist Calvin Sim, who won Singapore’s first men’s cycling gold (men’s omnium) in 20 years at last year’s SEA Games in Malaysia.

If he picks up the Sportsman gong, Schooling – who won the title in 2012, 2015, 2016, and 2017 – will be the first athlete to win the award four times in a row. Swimming legend Ang Peng Siong had previously won the same accolade thrice in a row between 1983 and 1985.

Table tennis player Feng Tianwei, Shayna Ng (bowling), and Jasmine Ser (shooting) are the finalists for the Sportswoman of the Year accolade.

Silat exponent Abdul Raaziq Abdul Rashid will face Muhammad Daniel Kei Mohammad Yazid (sailing) in the Sportsboy of the Year category, while four athletes are in the running for the Sportsgirl of the Year award. They are: fencer Amita Berthier, Martina Lindsay Veloso (shooting), Quah Jing Wen (swimming), and synchronised swimmer Debbie Soh. Two nominees – national ice skating coach Chun Lee Kyung and National Training Centre head coach Gary Tan (swimming) will contest the Coach of the Year category.

The national women’s floorball team has picked up its first accolade at the Singapore Sports Awards, as the 20-strong squad are the only nominees for the Team of the Year (Team Sport).

The Team of the Year (Event) will see a five-way fight between the women’s bowling team, female divers Ashlee Tan and Fong Kay Yian, men’s lawn bowls team, men’s squash team, and 2017 SEA Games men’s 4x100m freestyle relay team (swimming).

A total of 12 awards will be handed out at the Singapore Sports Awards on July 18, with a new category – Sports Journalist of the Year – to make its debut. The nominees are: Mr Duncan Elias (Eleven Sports), Mr Kenneth Tan (FourFourTwo), Mr Lim Say Heng (The Straits Times), Ms Low Lin Fhoong (TODAY), and Mr Shamir Osman (The Straits Times).

Ms Juliana Seow, Chairperson of SSA 2018 Organising Committee, said: “There were many splendid performances by Team Singapore last year which included a best away performance at the SEA Games and medals won at the bowling, fencing, shooting, swimming and wushu world championships.

“We are looking forward to recognise and celebrate their achievements at the Singapore Sports Awards.”
