SINGAPORE — Ngee Ann Polytechnic and the police are investigating an incident where students were captured on video taking turns to urinate on others in what is believed to be a bathroom on campus.

The polytechnic told TODAY on Tuesday (March 23) that the incident did not take place during its freshman orientation programme or as part of preparations for the programme.

It has identified the students in the video and none of them are freshmen.

The police said that they were alerted to a “case of voyeurism” on Monday at about 9.50pm and are investigating. It was unclear who made the report.

Overnight, a video started making the rounds on social media showing a group of male students urinating on two naked boys kneeling and squatting against the wall of a shower cubicle.

One of the students could be heard shouting at the others: “I want you to empty your vessels.”

Another said: “Pee (on) the hair.”

When one of the boys being urinated on turned on the shower, someone said to him: “No showering.”

Another video showed five boys in a toilet smiling at the camera, their pants pulled down to their ankles.

It was unclear when the incident happened, although some of the boys were seen with face masks under their chins.

Ngee Ann Polytechnic said that it was conducting an internal disciplinary inquiry and would take appropriate disciplinary action against students found to have breached its code of conduct for students, which sets out the behaviour expected of them.

“We take a serious view of this matter and do not condone or tolerate any form of misconduct.”

It will also consider taking disciplinary action against the students who flouted safe-distancing regulations to curb the spread of Covid-19.

“Meanwhile, we have reached out to the students involved to extend counselling support.”

In an email to students on Tuesday evening that was seen by TODAY, Mr Simon Tan, the polytechnic's director of student and alumni services, said: “We will also tighten our supervision of student activities to ensure the safety and well-being of all our students.”

Some of the videos, which were posted to social networks TikTok, Instagram and Twitter, have since been taken down.

The videos set off much public chatter online, with many people saying that the incident was a hazing ritual during a freshman orientation camp.

A person, who identified himself as one of the boys who had been urinated on, said on his Instagram page that the act was not a case of bullying.

Instead, the person said that it had been “consensual” and considered it to be “mindless fun”.

TODAY was unable to contact him to independently verify his claims.
