SINGAPORE — Supermarket chain NTUC FairPrice is extending its discount schemes for members of the Pioneer and Merdeka Generations by another year.

The schemes will be extended until Dec 31 next year at an estimated cost of more than S$10 million, FairPrice announced in a statement on Monday (Dec 28).

Under the scheme, members of the Pioneer Generation, who are born in 1949 or earlier, receive a 3 per cent discount on their purchases on Mondays and Wednesdays.

This is the seventh time that FairPrice is extending its Pioneer Generation discount scheme, which was rolled out in 2014.

Members of the Merdeka Generation, who are born in the 1950s, get a 3 per cent discount on Wednesdays as part of a scheme introduced last year.

All other senior citizens aged 60 and older receive a 2 per cent discount on Tuesdays.

The extensions will run from Jan 1 to Dec 31 next year.

Since it was introduced, FairPrice’s Pioneer Generation discount scheme has handed out more than S$24 million in discounts to seniors in that group.

In the past year, members of the Pioneer Generation who shopped at FairPrice stores saved more than S$4.5 million, and Merdeka Generation seniors saved more than S$3.3 million. Senior citizens recorded more than S$2.2 million in savings.

Mr Seah Kian Peng, FairPrice’s group chief executive officer, said: "With the extension of the discounts, together with our various initiatives at moderating costs, we hope that these efforts will continue to help customers stretch their dollar in the year ahead.”
