SINGAPORE — The National University of Singapore (NUS) rose to No 21 in the Times Higher Education (THE) World Reputation Rankings of universities in the 2014 list released this morning (March 6), while Nanyang Technological University (NTU) tumbled to the bottom of the top 100.

The rankings are based on academic opinion, stemming from an invitation-only survey of 10,536 respondents from 133 countries.

NUS, which rose from No 22 in last year’s list, remains the third highest ranked university in Asia behind Tokyo University and Kyoto University.

NUS President Professor Tan Chorh Chuan said the university is “pleased” that NUS has continued its steady rise in the THE rankings.

“We believe that this reflects the quality of our faculty and students, the innovations in education which we have pursued, our broad-based research strengths and our extensive collaborations with leading overseas universities, local institutions and industry,” Prof Tan said.

“We will strive to further differentiate ourselves in education, research and its application, and in thought-leadership as a global university centred in Asia.”

Meanwhile, NTU fell from the 71st to 80th band in the 2013 list to the 91st to 100th band this year. Only the top 50 universities are given a specific rank.

London-based Times described NTU’s tumble as “a surprise”. The magazine added that NTU’s decision to deny journalism professor Cherian George tenure last year may have hurt its reputation among academics.
