SINGAPORE — One Direction fans in Singapore have proven how fervent they could be, as they made the loudest screams on Twitter for Singapore users this year, beating even the die-hard Beliebers.

The most popular tweet in the local ‘Twitterverse’ was by One Direction’s Zayn Malik who wrote “Harry wake up !!” with a picture of fellow member Harry Styles deep in slumber. The tweet was posted on Jan 10.

Moreover, eight out of 10 of the most popular tweets were by the British teen idols; the other two spots were taken by American singer-actress Ariana Grande and Canadian popstar Justin Bieber with a 3rd and 6th ranking respectively. The top K-pop group on Twitter for locals was 2NE1.

Twitter measured the top tweets by the number of times they had been retweeted, favourited and replied by Singaporean users.

Local celebrities might not made it into the list of Top 10 but MediaCorp artiste Joanne Peh remained as one of the most followed local celebrities on Twitter with 53,240 followers as of today (Dec 23).

Pastor Kong Hee was also one of the most talked-about figures on the local Twitter community, and he has 92,547 followers as of today.

There were no surprises for the hot topics in Twitter among Singaporeans this year — the haze, McDonald’s Hello Kitty hype, Hawker Heroes and most recently, the Little India Riot, dominated Twitter conversations here.

The Formula One race was among the top local events here, joined by the Color Run and ZoukOut, while Chanel, Gucci and Louis Vuitton were the brands with the most buzz locally on Twitter.

Meanwhile, the iPhone, iPad and Samsung Galaxy devices were the most popular devices mentioned on Twitter in Singapore.
